Just got back from the North American premiere ofDisconnectat TIFF. I will post spoilers under the cut but let me just start off by saying this was a really, really good movie. There were many scenes that really struck a chord with the sold-out crowd and people (including me) actually gasped at least twice during the movie.
This is Henry Alex Rubin’s first movie, he previously worked on documentaries and actually won the Oscar for Murderball. He received a standing ovation after the screening and seemed really humbled by it. There were four cast members there: Paula Patton (holy fuck, she has the sexiest, sultriest voice I’ve ever heard on a woman. Goddamn!), Frank Grillo (I still remember him from Guilding Light!), Jason Bateman (charming and handsome in person) and one of the child actors whose name I don’t remember.
Disconnectis four separate tales that are loosely connected with one major them in common: the internet. It’s not really a morality tale, telling us what’s good or bad, it just shows us how this medium that’s taken over our lives affects us in different ways.
Alexander Skarsgard and Paula Patton play a married couple (Derek and Cindy) who are struggling in their marriage after the loss of a child. Fangirl note: they use one of Alex’s behind-the-scenes pictures from Generation Kill where he’s dressed as Brad Colbert in the movie. Also, there’s a scene of him holding a baby and cooing to it, and yeah, ovaries explosion again. WTF, ALEX? LIKE IT’S NOT ENOUGH YOU HAVE TO BE HOT, TALENTED AND CHARISMATIC? WHY YOU GOTTA BE SO ADORABLE WITH KIDS ON TOP OF THAT? ASSWIPE. They tried really hard to uglify him in the movie to which I say, THEY TRIED. IT DIDN’T WORK.
Reblogging my Disconnect review from TIFF for those interested.
